Opening Acts: Folding, Sliding and Pivoting Doors

Opening Acts: Folding, Sliding and Pivoting Doors

While the Northeastern region of the U.S. was hit by a Halloween snowstorm this fall, much of the South continues to be enjoying atmosphere finally cool enough to let doors and windows to stay open, fostering luxurious cross breezes. I have a back door, but all this sumptuous air is making me wish I had a more deluxe beachfront threshold.

You can find many different door goods, but a few of my favorites (and most attractive) open completely, blurring the boundaries between outside and inside and allowing for full, open opinions (and breezes). That’s not only great in the summer, but crucial in the winter, to keep homes warm and bright and spirits high, even as the sun sits lower in the sky.

Lift-and-slide doorways: Everyone is familiar with sliding doors, but have you ever seen such a monstrous one? Think of all the views you can take in! This is far in the squeaky plastic or metal sliding doors with which most of us are comfortable.

While a few oversize doors are created habit, companies such as BelleHaven Specialties and Door Studio provide a variety of size, wood, hardware and finish options. Without inward or outward swings, sliding doors are phenomenal space-savers, especially when trying to attain huge doors spans without taking up precious real estate. This layout accentuates the doorways with contrasting wood frames.

Pivot doors. Pivot doors swing on a principal hinge and therefore are supported entirely with a base arm, putting all the weight on the floor, rather than the frame. This makes it possible to utilize doors that are extremely heavy and reduce wear and tear over the framework. In additional to being aesthetically pleasing and architecturally intriguing, pivot doors can be used for fire-rated openings, meaning they are acceptable for outdoor usage in many applications.

Frosted glass gives this patio privacy. The partial-height door does not cut off light or air flow, and the pivoting mechanism allows for its usage of a large statement doorway that does not swing out as far into one space; the swing is distributed between two folds and spaces from a wall, keeping the passageway clear.

Multiple French doors. When you’ve got an expanse of unconnected doors and windows and would like to start up the space up without going via a huge remodel, then multiple hinged French doors might be your answer.

They achieve a similar goal as the formerly shown goods without the expense of retrofitting door frames to accommodate huge expanses of glass.

Steel panes provide the look a feel. Thanks to the strength of the material, steel doors and windows have thin sight lines, obscuring less of the opinion outdoors while requiring much less maintenance than wood.
