How to correct the Factors of a Toilet Water Surge

A normal drain-line system for a toilet or sink includes a vent pipe, or port riser. The port allows an exchange of atmosphere in the drainpipe so water may flow freely to the sewer or septic tank. If a port riser becomes obstructed, air builds up in the drainpipe and when it discharges, water in the bathroom basin may bubble and rise, be sucked out, or even both. Generally, a very simple procedure used by professionals will eliminate the cause of toilet water surge.

Drainpipe

Find the clean-out hub for the toilet drainpipe in the outside wall of the restroom. Based on the time of the house, the hub will be cast iron or black plastic and has a plug that you remove using a pipe wrench Normally, a clean-out hub is between 12 and 16 inches above the ground, and angles outward.

Fit the jaws of a 16-inch pipe wrench on the square in the plug and then loosen the plug counterclockwise to remove it.

Wear work gloves. Insert the end of a 20-foot contractor’s snake into the open hub. Loosen the thumbscrew on the sliding grip of the snake and slide the grip so that it’s three feet in the hub. Tighten the thumbscrew.

Twist the grip of the snake clockwise as you push the snake into the drainpipe, repositioning the handle as you proceed. If the snake stops, twist it several times to grab a barrier in the pipe, and continue to twist as you pull the snake and obstacle out of the pipe and rhythm. If the drainpipe is apparent, the issue may be a clogged vent riser.

Vent Riser

Measure back in the outside wall of the bathroom and locate the top end of the vent-riser pipe over the roof. Rank an extension ladder in the edge of the roof nearby. Coil the snake and then carry it on the roof.

Insert the end of the snake into the top end of the port riser. Slide the grip back as you push the snake into the pipe until it hits an obstacle, such as a clump of leaves. Twist the grip of the snake and then pull the snake out of the riser to remove the obstacle.

Remove the debris or leaves in the end of the snake. Insert the snake to the port riser. Slide the grip and reposition it just before. Push the snake down to make sure the riser is clear and unobstructed.

Reattach the clean-out plug together with the pipe wrench.
