7. Quirky Vintage Kitchen
Designer/homeowner: Robert Mace
Location: Austin, Texas

This Exceptional kitchen is the result of a DIY remodel of a 130-year-old Louisiana shotgun-shack-style house. When Robert Mace purchased the home, the kitchen was located in an open rear porch using a lean-to roof which was closed in with a couple awkward developments, making a complete remodel a necessity.

Mace needed the kitchen to echo the rest of the house’s quirky character and his love of classic collectibles. Contrasting color resides on each surface — that the countertop is a hardy concrete, dyed red. The walnut floor has been painted several colors, until Mace landed on the final color of green. As the floor wears, all the other colors will slowly reveal themselves. Salvaged and DIY cabinetry is painted in contrasting purples to combine with the yellow walls and green flooring.
