Kitchen of the Week: Colorful Hub in Southern California

Kitchen of the Week: Colorful Hub in Southern California

A wild color palette, bright storage ideas along with a distinctive foot-traffic strategy shifted this kitchen into a colorful space for a family of 3 in San Luis Obispo, California.

Although aesthetic was significant, the biggest priority for this particular kitchen was controlling traffic circulation, since the residence is located in the middle of the home. The family hired Green Goods, which split the room based on work and came up with some clever storage solutions.

All the other rooms lie on all sides of this kitchen including spokes on a bicycle, so the design had to operate for a considerable amount of traffic.

Green Goods split the 280-square-foot space into a dining and kitchen room, leaving an important aisle between. By tilting the island marginally towards the kitchen work place, the group managed to add space for two bar stools without disrupting the pathway.

The group snagged some additional square footage out of an oversized bath next to the kitchen, also created a corner to get a built-in fridge. This opened up the bedroom wing into the kitchen, and created enough room for a colorful and lighted cookbook nook.

The exceptional countertops are a durable blend of concrete and recycled glass, with custom colors chosen especially by the clients. Deep purple cabinets along with a bright turquoise backsplash pay tribute to the client’s color choices.

Small spaces in cabinet runs at which a fill might normally be added were instead used as additional storage for cookie sheets and a built-in spice rack. Green Goods additionally installed pull-out racks from the colorful cabinetry to make better use of difficult to reach spaces.

The borders of the bamboo cabinet boxes were left exposed to emphasize the natural grain of this wood. Instead of drawer pulls and knobs, the group decided to notch the cabinet doors, measuring all the family member’s hands and fingers to make sure they’d fit.

A bamboo pocket door in lieu of a conventional swing door saves space and helps open up this portion of the room. Green Goods used custom Green Leaf Doors — toxic-free doors made with sustainable Moso bamboo — for the first time in this residential project.
