Color Feast: The Way To Utilize Gray at the Dining Room

Color Feast: The Way To Utilize Gray at the Dining Room

I’ve seen many a homeowner become intimidated by color and fall back on white or beige due to their dining rooms. That’s not to say you shouldn’t ever use those mild, neutral colors in your home; however if you are looking to step out your beige-clad comfort zone, nevertheless favor maintaining to a neutral palette, then consider using grey. Medium to dark grays are particularly unexpected in a dining area. They have an air of elegance, and they look crisp and contemporary when blended with white. You can warm up it by integrating wood tones or other hot neutrals, which I highly advise if you live in a cool, rainy climate.

This chamber feels light-filled and airy despite the somewhat shadowy grey wall color. By pairing this grey with a great deal of white, you get a great dose of drama from the dark hue without having it feel gloomy or heavy. Actually, it’s the perfect neutral background for small dashes of daring blue or any other color you may want to introduce to the space.

The grey on those walls is a bit cooler than the preceding example, however, the white ceiling and window trim and the light flooring possess precisely the same effect of softening the walls’ hefty hue.

Talking of windows, my attention is drawn right to those fantastic floor-to-ceiling windows. It is the comparison between the black, deep wall color and sharp white trim which makes them really stand out. If you have interesting architectural details in your dining area, use color to call attention to them.

Dark grey also makes the perfect background for light-colored art or decorative accessories. You might also use light, like the wall-washing cans here, to draw attention to art on a darker wall.

What an amazing space for entertaining! I love the line of small, square skylights along the border where the wall meets the ceiling. The pops of blue skies against the graphite grey wall are magnificent.

For those who prefer lighter colors of grey, this modern indoor/outdoor dining area with its warm grey mesa stone walls and soft grey limestone flooring has a controlled palette that still packs a style punch. I particularly appreciate the variety of textures — the rich, warm wood of the stunning dining room, the gleam of metal in the pendant lights, the smooth, textured floors, along with the rougher texture of the walls.

Gray-clad rooms can at times feel trendy and uninviting, but this dining area overflows with warmth and charm from the textured soft grey walls, hot cedar wood and fun decorative components.
