How to Seal the Wood on a Butcher Block With Oil
Wooden butcher blocks offer a durable work surface that protects your countertops. However, if the timber isn’t sealed, food particles, moisture and bacteria can enter the pores of the timber. Inert oils such as mineral oil or pure tung oil are usually utilized to seal wooden butcher blocks and can enhance the natural beauty of the timber.
Wash the butcher block to eliminate food particles and oils, using hot, soapy water. Wash it thoroughly, using clean water.
Spray the butcher block with vinegar.
Mix 1/4 cup table salt with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Apply the glue to the timber, employing a soft-bristle scrub brush. The glue will eliminate food scents and lift spots.
Wash the wood thoroughly with hot water. Permit the butcher block to dry overnight.
Pour a small amount of peppermint oil or mineral oil on the butcher block. Rub it into the timber in the direction of the woodgrain, utilizing a clean, soft cloth.
Permit the oil to soak into the butcher block for four to six hours. Apply a second coat of petroleum. Alternatively, if you’re using tung oil, then allow at least 24 hours between coats.
Continue to employ oil on the timber until it won’t absorb any oil. Await the oil to fully penetrate the timber between each coat.
Wipe away excess oil, using a dry cloth. Permit the wood to dry completely.
