The best way to Propagate Red Maples

Red maple (Acer rubrum L.) is easily propagated from seeds or a shoot obtained from from a red maple stump. The trees create huge quantities of seeds throughout late spring and early summer that need little planning to plant. Maple seeds are mature when they start to fall in the tree and turn brown. It is possible to collect seeds in the tree for propagation when this method starts. Cuttings taken from trees are challenging to root but are still another viable approach of propagation for the maple.

Seed Propagation

Pour planting medium into an increasing pot with room and sufficient drainage to create a good environment that is growing. Use a pot measuring at least 8″ in diameter to permit the seedling space to develop before transplanting.

Harvest the seeds throughout early summer or late spring. Locate a branch and shake it to dislodge the seeds that are mature. Mature maple seeds are prepared need no planning before planting and to plant when they can be picked.

Plant a seed in your pot of developing medium, burying the seed one to two inches below the surface of the soil. Place your pot and water it frequently. Without saturating the soil, water frequently enough to keep the soil moist. Maple seeds usually germinate within 10 days of planting.

Vegetative Propagation

Prepare a developing medium created from equal parts of peat, sand and perlite. Pour the mixture into a plant pot with drainage holes to produce a quickly draining expanding medium for the stem cutting.

Locate a stump with developing shoots through the first summer months following the maples have completed seeding. Select a wholesome stem which is between 6 and 8″ long, and take it off in the bottom of the stem from your stump.

Remove any leaves in the bottom half of the stem you picked. Create a shallow incision about an inch long. Pour a tiny amount of powdered rooting hormone and dip the tip of the stem to the hormone, since the the incisions close to the base.

Plant the stump stem in the medium you prepared, since the the bottom 3″ of the stem with s Oil. Water the medium that is expanding lightly to keep the s Oil moist. Place your stump slicing in a partly shaded spot and mist the leaves of the stem to stop the stem before it may establish roots from becoming dry.
