How to Fix a Frigidaire Gallery Top Load Washer Using a Clogged Hose

If your Frigidaire Gallery top load washer neglects to drain following the spin cycle, but you hear the pump working, it’s a indication that the drain hose is clogged. In some instances, you could be able to fish the barrier from the discharge end; however, if that fails, you need to remove the hose and attempt to clear it in the other end — and after partially dismantling the machine, the fastest and easiest way to address the problem may be to replace the clogged hose with a fairly inexpensive fresh one.

Unplug the washer and slide it away from the wall. Inspect the drain hose; when it is kinked, straighten it, restore power and also run a spin cycle to find out if this solves the problem.

Shine a torch down the discharge end of the hose. If you find an obstacle, like a sock or wad of compacted lint, then try to fish it out with a combined piece of stiff wire. If that fails, you’ll need to remove the hose to either replace or clean it.

Turn off the cold and hot water supply faucets and use tongue-and-groove pliers to undo the two hose couplings in the rear of the drier.

Secure the washer lid by attaching two strips of tape above the left and right front edge of the lid and the top panel.

Insert a putty knife into the seam between the upper and the front panels of the drier cabinet, about 2 inches in from every corner. Disengage both spring clips securing the top by pushing the putty knife in while lifting the front edge of the cabinet top.

Rotate the top up and back and prevent it from falling backward by tying a piece of strong cord or string between the holes near the front corner and the side edge of the top panel.

Remove the two screws securing the bottom edge of the front panel into the drier frame with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the panel down to free it from just two upward-facing mounting hooks on each side, and remove the panel.

Find the drain pump mounted indoors on the lower left of the opening, and establish the black ribbed drain hose connected to the discharge port on the rear of the pump. Place an absorbent rag under the pump to catch any spilled water. Squeeze the tabs on the hose clamp together with a set of pliers and slide the clamp and drain hose off the pump discharge port.

Lift the end of the plastic retaining ring above the hose to free it in the underside of the cupboard. Use the pliers to squeeze with the ends of the plastic retaining clip on the inside of the back panel. Push the clip through the panel to free the exterior hose.

Go to the rear of the unit, remove the retaining ring in the hose, and slide the round plastic splash guard off the end of the hose. Push the remainder of the hose through the opening in the back panel of the cupboard.

Transfer the pump hose clamp in the old hose into the new hose. Slide the discharge end of the new hose through the opening in the back panel from the inside. Go to the rear of the unit. Hook the formerly removed retaining ring above the hose, push the retaining clip on the end of the retaining ring into its hole and press inward till you feel it snap into position. Slide the round plastic splash guard above the end of the hose and place it about 2 inches from the onset of the ribbed section.

Reach inside the front opening and push the end of the hose above the pump discharge port. Compress the poles onto the hose clamp along with the pliers, slide it into position above the pump discharge port, release the pliers and lift the end of the plastic retaining ring above the hose. Remove the rag from under the pump.

Reposition the front panel. Expand the upward-facing mounting hooks with the slots on the side panels, then push on the front panel in and lift it up till the mounting hooks are in place. Replace the two Phillips-head screws removed before to secure the foundation of the front panel into the drier frame.

Remove the cord supporting the shirt, lower the upper panel back into position, and press firmly down to the front corners till the spring clips snap into position. Remove the tape holding the lid into position.

Reconnect the water supply hoses, and slide the washer back from the wall. Insert the end of the drain hose into the standpipe of the washer drain so that 3 or 4 inches of hose is inside the drain tube. Plug in the power cord and analyze the machine for proper drainage.
