What Color Are Poppy Seeds?

Several plants lay claim to the common title “poppy.” The most comfortable is the common or opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), which can be grown for its flowers as well as its seeds. Poppy seeds are many different colors.

Opium Poppy

The opium poppy, which is illegal to grow in certain U.S. states, is valued most because of its nutty-tasting seeds. The colour of the seeds depends on the plant’s selection. The seeds of several varieties are white while other varieties’ seeds range from blue-black to strong black. Even though opium poppy seeds are edible, the remaining part of the plant is toxic. The drug opium is made of the sap of the seed capsules. Opium poppy is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10.

California and Oriental Poppies

Grown mainly as wildflowers, California poppy (Eschscholzia Californica) along with oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) produce seeds that aren’t valued for culinary use; those seeds are dark brown to dark. The seeds are common in wildflower mixtures, and the plants are extremely straightforward to grow. California poppy is deemed invasive in some places, but removing its spent flowers helps prevent the plant from spreading. California poppy is hardy in USDA zones 6 through 10, and oriental poppy is hardy in USDA zones 2 through 9.
